Technical Services /Cataloging Librarian
Reports to: Library Director
8-40 hours per week including weekend hours
Salary (Grade D):   $13.71-$18.92

General Summary: to provide library materials to the public in a timely manner through classification, cataloging, and oversight of clerical staff.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  Performs original cataloging for material not found on bibliographic support systems
            •  Performs copy cataloging for materials found on bibliographic support systems

  Reviews processing by clerical staff as well as data entered into automated system by technical support staff, checking for quality of processing and accuracy of inputting
            •  Assists in local database management, including developmental and maintenance of local authority files and holdings and deletions in library catalog database
            •  Assists with network and Internet maintenance duties
            •  Recommends procedural and workflow changes in department to achieve optimum materials throughput
            •  Assists in developing department procedure policies and manuals
            •  Prepares administrative reports to meet assigned deadlines
            •  Assists in re-classification projects

            Additional Job Duties:
            •  Attends meetings, training seminars as required
            •  Check out to patron and receive library print and non-print materials
            •  Assists and instructs patrons in the use of computer software and peripherals including online databases, Internet sources, accessing our wireless network and the OPAC
            •  Performs other job-related duties as needed.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

            •  Preferred knowledge of cataloging principles and procedures
            •  More important, must possess willingness and ability to be trained
            •  Must possess ability to communicate effectively

  Must possess ability to function independently, have flexibility and the ability to work effectively with clients, co-workers and others

  Must possess knowledge of various computer programs, bibliographic support systems and the Internet

  Must possess the technical knowledge of operating personal computers and other office equipment with accuracy and reasonable speed

  Must have the ability to instruct other in use of a variety of computer programs and methods

  Must be able to produce required reports and data as needed by various departments and to assist with other computer needs and services

  Must possess some knowledge, principles and practices of supervision and ability to apply it to job duties


Education, Experience and Training:
Minimum Qualifications:

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in a related field with 1-2 years working experience in cataloging services and library automation software or any equivalent combination of experience, education and training which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the work.
